Barcelona comes in third place of most photographed cities around the world according to Sightsmap’s most photographed places around the globe. New York and Rome top the list and Paris comes in fourth place. Based on photos posted by users of Google Maps Panoramio service, the Sightsmap site has concocted an interactive map of the most photographed places in the world. Sightsmap is more than just a map of tourist destinations however; it also shows the close connection between architecture and what inspires people to take photos.
New York topped the list with its Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Guggenheim Museum, followed by Rome with the Trinità dei Monti, the church at the top of the Spanish Steps, being the city’s most snapped sight. Barcelona took the third place slot with Park Güell, the Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi’s surreal ‘garden city’ park complex, being the city's most photographed place, while Paris came in at fourth with the Moulin Rouge cabaret usurping the Eiffel Tower as the most photographed attraction in the French capital. Istanbul rounded up the top five with its historic 12th century Maiden Tower.

Broad patches of purple or dark areas coincide with a lesser amount of photographs; the red areas have more while smaller clusters of yellow areas have a large number of photos geotagged revealing the locations where people can't seem to put their cameras down. Unsurprisingly, the densest areas of yellow are the world's most popular tourist spots − including New York City and cities across Europe such as Barcelona or Istanbul.

The website Sightsmap reveals the most photographed places around the globe in a colorful gradient map of purples, reds, and yellows. The hottest places have markers linking photos, streetview, wikipedia, wikivoyage, foursquare and google plus articles about the site. The place names are selected by the wikipedia readership numbers and foursquare checkins. Area populations are based on the geonames database.
